Qatar Calls Siege Countries to Sit to Negotiating Table to End Human Rights Violations

The State of Qatar called on the siege countries to sit to the negotiating table to end the human rights violations committed in the context of the Gulf crisis, which have affected a large number of individuals and families. This came in the Statement of Qatar, delivered by HE Permanent Representative of the State Qatar to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Ali Khalfan Al Mansouri, during the general debate on the oral update by the High Commissioner for Human Rights under Item (2) of the Human Rights Council's 39th Session. HE Qatar's Permanent Representative to UN Office in Geneva stated: "We concur with the High Commissioner's statement that political differences may divide some of the countries, but upholding human rights is in the interest of every State. In this context, we call on siege countries to sit to the negotiating table to end the human rights violations committed in the context of the Gulf crisis, which have affected a large number of individuals and families".


Qatar Reiterates Commitment to Mediation to Settle Conflicts by Peaceful Means

The State of Qatar reiterated its commitment to mediation to settle conflicts and disputes by peaceful means, affirming that its interest in mediation lies at the heart of the priority it attaches to the maintenance of peace and security and the peaceful settlement of disputes. The State of Qatar also underlined its keenness on enhancing and supporting the sustainability of peace, as it contributed to the preparation for the UN General Assembly High-level Meeting on Peacebuilding and Sustaining Peace in April.

His Highness the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani sent cable of condolences to Indonesia president Joko Widodo on the victims of the earthquake that hit Lombok island in western Indonesia,wishing the injured a speedy recovery.



The State of Qatar informs UN Security Council and UN Secretary-General of ICJ's decision Approving Provisional Measures Against UAE

The State of Qatar informed the UN Security Council and the UN Secretary-General of the International Court of Justice's (ICJ) decision in favor of Qatar to take provisional measures against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the case related to discrimination against Qatari citizens. This came in a message from Qatars Permanent Representative to the United Nations, HE Ambassador Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani to HE the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and HE Security Council President for this month Olof Skoog. HE the ambassador referenced the State of Qatar's previous messages that highlighted the implications of the blockade and the illegal and discriminatory measures taken against The State of Qatar since June 5 of 2017. The message also highlighted that the ICJ issued a binding ruling to accept Qatar's request of taking provisional measures against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) after the latter took discriminatory measures against Qatari citizens in violation of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (CERD).


Qatar Hails ICJ Decision on Interim Measures Against UAE

The State of Qatar has hailed the decision of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to approve the State of Qatar's request for interim measures against the UAE in the case of discriminatory treatment against Qatari nationals, which obliged the UAE to ensure the reunification of families separated by the measures taken by the UAE and to give Qatari students affected by these measures the opportunity to complete their studies in the UAE or obtain their educational records as well as access of Qatari nationals affected by such measures to courts and judicial bodies in the UAE. This came in a statement delivered by the Acting Charge d'affaires of the Permanent Mission of State of Qatar to the United Nations, Abdulrahman Yacoub Al Hammadi, before the UN Security Council session on the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question, where he welcomed the ICJ decision on July 23, 2018.


Foreign Ministry Spokesperson : Qatar Does Not Intend to Escalate the Crisis with the UAE

HE Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Lolwah Al Khater said the State of Qatar does not intend to escalate the crisis with United Arab Emirates, however it is only important for the State to resort to legal means and lift the harm inflicted on citizens affected by the procedures taken by the UAE against them. These remarks were made in an interview with Turkey's Anadolu Agency in Doha, where she touched on the complaint submitted by the State of Qatar against the UAE in the International Court of Justice (ICJ). The court is expected to issue a preliminary decision on the complaint on Monday.


Qatar: The Worst Forms of Racism and Discrimination Are Those Resulted by Government Decisions and State Policies

The State of Qatar underlined that the worst forms of racism and racial discrimination are those resulted by government decisions and State policies which constitute legal and institutional discrimination based on official decisions enforced by the force of law by all State institutions, calling on the Human Rights Council and the international community to exert pressure on the siege countries to end the coercive measures imposed on the State of Qatar and its citizens for a year ago, stop the violations resulting from these measures and to hold those responsible accountable and compensate those who have been affected. Addressing the 38th session of the Human Rights Council during the general debate under Item 9: Racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related forms of intolerance: follow-up to and implementation of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action, HE Qatar's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva Ambassador Ali Khalfan Al Mansouri explained that the unilateral coercive measures taken by the siege countries against the State of Qatar and its citizens for a year ago had targeted individuals only on the basis of their nationality or relation with the State of Qatar, and thus they were classified by the technical mission of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights as discriminatory and disproportionate measures, resulting in gross and continuing violations of human rights.


Qatar Reiterates its Commitment to Implement the Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy

The State of Qatar reiterated its full determination to cooperate with various United Nations bodies related to the fight against terrorism and to support the efforts of those bodies in fulfilling their mandate and their ability to assist Member States in eradicating this scourge. This came in a statement delivered by Deputy Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Abdulrahman Yacoub Al Hammadi, at the UN General Assembly session on "Sixth Review of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy" at UN Headquarters in New York. The Deputy Permanent Representative reviewed the comprehensive approach taken by the State of Qatar in the fight against terrorism, reaffirmed its commitment to the implementation of the Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy and its fully compliance with its obligations under international instruments and Security Council resolutions relating to the fight against terrorism and its financing as well as its severe condemnation of terrorism in all its forms whenever and wherever committed and by whomever committed regardless of its justifications.


Qatar: Siege and Unjust Measures Embody Irresponsible Policies That Do Not Adhere to International Law

This came in a statement delivered by HE Qatar's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani before a formal meeting of the UN Security Council, convened by the President of the Security Council, the Ambassador of Russia, the current President of the Council, on the "Maintenance of International Peace and Security: Comprehensive Review of the Situation in the Middle East and North Africa".
